Catching up. . .
Here is a brief rundown of some things we did.
Trimming the Tree
I INSISTED we cut down our own tree this year. Our backyard is basically farmland. Okay, not really our backyard, but cross a street or two and you are on a farm! And they go on for miles and miles. There were signs for Christmas trees on just about every street corner we passed. Every time we would pull into a farm, they were either closed or had pre-cut trees. So I made us keep driving until we found one of the U-cut farms that was actually open. This took quite a lot longer than anticipated.
By the time we pulled into Haggs, it was almost dark. The girls had fallen asleep in the car, so we had to pick the perfect tree without them. And we had to do it in about ten minutes. Luckily, Brian found a good one and he got right to work. He got dirty. He got wet. But he did it! And it was so worth it.
Our tree was lovely. The greenest one I've ever had, and the smell? Oh my goodness, the smell! When we took it down last week the needles were still soft and it was as green as ever. I loved cutting down our own tree.
And, I've abandoned my dream of a farm in Idaho. Instead I've committed to a Christmas tree farm in Oregon. I always wondered what we were going to farm in Idaho, because I'm not married to a farmer. Goats was the only thing I could come up with. But now I'm going to farm Christmas trees and serve people hot chocolate when they come. And I might still have some goats, just for good measure.
Party at the Church
There's not much to say about our ward Christmas party. It had a German theme. We had German food and talked about German traditions. They even put a giant, real Christmas tree in the cultural hall. It was quite a sight. The kids were running around like I remember running around at ward Christmas parties. The food was delicious, and the company was great.
Gingerbread Houses
One of the best Matthews' traditions is making gingerbread houses. We do it every year. We are hard core, and make our own gingerbread. It's hard to do. This year, I had to make the icing as well, which Grandma usually does. I felt a lot of pressure. Brian has an amazing mom and I've thankfully never felt pressure from him to live up to her many talents and abilities. . .except for when I was making this icing. It was that kind of pressure. But I did okay. Not as good as Adele, but good enough.
A funny story about this night. We had invited our friends the Thompson's to join us. My friend Starr had even went so far as to make her own gingerbread too. I was so excited to have them over. Ellery had thrown up (what's new?) a couple days before. About twenty minutes before they were to come over McKay started saying that his tummy felt weird. Sick? He didn't know. I couldn't tell if he was really sick and trying to say he wasn't, or if he was trying to say he was sick when he really wasn't. Confused? I was too. Finally, as he was laying there on the kitchen floor amid bowls of candy I decided to call Starr and tell her not to come. I figured if he wasn't bouncing off the walls with excitement then something was probably wrong.
We still decorated ours anyway and I sent Starr home with half of the candy and icing so they could do theirs too. I was totally bummed though. . .especially when McKay perked up a short time later and never got sick. Oh well, we still had fun.
It's also a tradition to take a picture of your finished house in front of the Christmas tree. Love Ellery's pose.
Zoo Lights
We had a great trip to the zoo to see the lights. We did this last year with Brian's family, except we actually did it in the dark that time. This year, we went right before the zoo closed (before they re-open for zoo lights). It was kind of light outside, but the lights were all on and we could still see them well enough. We got SO close to the polar bears! I had never seen them this close before, and so active! It was awesome. The polar bears are one of our favorite stops at the zoo, so to have a whole window to ourselves with them that close was pretty awesome.
So it was kind of cold. I was wearing a puffy coat I got at the gap a million years ago. Ellery was wearing her leopard Carter's raincoat. McKay's coat is from Costco. I tell you all this for one important reason. We were all toasty warm. You know who was cold? Yep, Bri. Brian was cold, even in his million-dollar-fancy-special-outdoorsman coat. This made me laugh and smile a lot.
A Major Award
We gave out our annual "Matthews Family Best Christmas Lights Award". Actually, this year we gave out two. I decided it would be fun to have the kids each pick their own house this year. This is such a fun thing to do. I absolutely love it. All the people we've given awards to are shocked/surprised/look-at-us-like-we're-crazy at first, and then once we explain what we're doing they can't contain their smiles. Lets be honest, people who put that much work on the lights outside their house are only going to be thrilled to have someone appreciate it. And who doesn't like M&M's?
Unfortunately, our trip was a little stressful, thanks to a certain little baby. She cried the whole time. So, none of us could really enjoy looking at lights like we had wanted to and this made us pick our winners pretty fast. I'm looking forward to next year. I hope Layla is done screaming in the car by then.
